We explore the experience of presence through the creation of an interactive performance installation, an auto-ethnographic study, and a telepresence workshop.
Presence in a Box: Crossing Liminal Spaces Performance Installation
Presence in a Box: Crossing Liminal Spaces premiered on March 10, 2016 at the One Art Space Gallery in NYC. I created this work in collaboration with Kristin Carlson, prOphecy Sun, and Greg Corness.
We explore how the experience of presence can transfer across physical space, virtual space, and time. Two small box shapes are separated within the gallery space. One box is the location for a live performance with sound and movement and the other box depicts looping videos of previous performances (shot from the performer’s perspective). Audiences can also trace pathways in one space that are reimagined and projected into the other space. Pathways generated by audience members accumulate, leaving traces of movement and sound for others to explore.
Photos from the premiere in NYC. The installation was part of the Scores + Traces: exposing the body through computation, exhibition, produced by MovingStories and LIMS, curated by Regina Miranda Ribeiro.
Following the performance we conducted an auto-ethnographic study of our experiences of presence while performing and watching the video of the performance. We found that digital technology provided multiple opportunities for us as performers to extend our feelings of presence and describe this experience as threaded presence in an upcoming publication.
Space Displaced Telepresence Workshop
Presence is a Box is a continuation of our exploration of presence in the telepresence workshop, Space Displaced.
In this workshop we explored the architecture of spatial data in separate spaces. We investigated “presence” in multiple forms and connected three spaces together: the Emily Carr elevator, UC Irvine performance space, and the Emily Carr performance space.
This performance was part of the Virtual Venues Festival directed by Professor John Crawford at UC Irvine.
